No buyer's remorse. Great for drone application. Wireless Cast latency hardly noticeable. Screen ultra sharp and super bright with vibrant colors. Great for FPV freestyle playback, Samsung Dex, 360° photos, and 3d movies from Vudu. Cons would be not as immersive, and screen isn't as large as say DJI Goggles
The whole reason I went with the GOOVIS Lite (HL01) is because I wanted a simple and easy video monitoring headset and this one is exactly what I hoped for.
My use is maybe a bit different than most. As a filmmaker I’ve used the headset to monitor camera feeds live on-location when “video village” isn’t an option. The Goovis allows me to see the video clearly in high resolution (something smaller playback monitors don’t offer) and makes the blinding sunlight a non-issue. The camera was recording 4K anamorphic (5447x2160) and the Goovis played it back clearly. The individual lens focusing allowed me to calibrate the image to match my vision (usually need glasses to see this closely). The only drawback was the Goovis Lite only plays back at 59.94 fps. Fortunately this wasn’t an issue since the entire shoot was in slow-mo so I just captured the footage at that frame rate. For future productions I’ll have to upgrade to the Goovis Pro to use variable frame rates.
Additionally, I recently had a cross-country flight after a video job and used the Goovis on the plane to go through footage and start the edit. Since plane seats are so cramped it’s hard to use a laptop in economy class (16” laptop can barely open) but with the Goovis it was like being back in my home editing suite. The only downside is trying to hit the right keys on the keyboard since I can’t see it with he headset on. Not Goovis’s fault, just something I need practice to get right. Also found my head in odd positions trying to "look around at the workspace" and would have to consciously reset my posture. But, again, this is more to do with me needed to get familiar with this work environment than with the device itself.
Over the weekend I rewatched the Jason Bourne trilogy and used the Goovis. It was a fun and immersive way to watch. The "shaky cam" in the film was a bit much for this viewing environment but I'm sure a more classically shot film would be fine. Felt the same way seeing them in the theater back in the day so if anything this is a compliment to Goovis, not a criticism. The headset is light and doesn’t get uncomfortable for a few hours. By the last film I did go back to the computer monitor but I’d say 4+ hours of wear before it started to bother me is impressive. Even most headphones become annoying after that much time!
I will be upgrading to the Goovis Pro for larger field of view and more frame rate options but for anyone looking for a simple and high-quality video playback headset this is the one to go with!
GOOVIS Lite (HL01) Personal Mobile Cinema
I bought the Lite specifically to play PS3 and PS4 2D video games. It worked great right out of the box on my PS4, but not my PS3. The Goovis support team helped me work through the settings on the PS3 for both sound and video and now it works great for both consoles. Those settings for the PS3 are straight 1080P for video and AAC Linear PCM 2 ch. 44.1 kHz. for audio. Another quirk exclusive to the PS3 is that, after starting the game, you need to raise and lower the Lite from the viewing position to trigger the auto off/on function in order to see and hear the game. It works this way on both of my PS3 "fat" consoles. Once you get those little kinks worked out, it's a blast to play games. The included head strap works great, and keeps the goggles firmly and comfortably in place, making long play sessions enjoyable. I suspect that there may be small, quiet fans built into the Lite because it never fogs up while playing. The adjustable diopter and ocular spacing should allow most users to enjoy the Lite without the need for corrective lenses. One tip; sit in a comfortable chair, preferably a recliner with good head support that will allow you to slightly recline and keep your head still while using the Lite, otherwise, you might experience motion sickness. The only real gripe I have with this headset is the video cord. it's heavy and stiff, permanently attached, and shoots straight out of the headset on the right side. At the very least, it would be nice if it came out with a 90° bend pointing down. Even better would be if was attached using a removable 90° plug. That gripe is just slightly inconvenient, and not a deal breaker for buying and using the Lite. BTW, the Lite is also great for watching movies!
I have the “Lite” version - I wanted to start out with Goovis’ least expensive version to get a feel for the overall experience- I am very delighted to say WOW! Awesome video quality and the multiple adjustments to accommodate my exact vision is over the top!! No headaches even after 2 movies back to back. Headset has a good comfortable fit! I use Roku to watch all that I need and I can watch on the go with my iPhone via lightening to HDMI adaptor.
I use a 36k mAh battery pack and never run out of power.
I was a little disappointed that I could not adjust the volume without buying an adaptor but was only a couple dollars.
I initially has an issue with the integrated HDMI cable- support was great- They paid for my device return and immediately sent out a replacement. Very short wait time.
Overall - very impressed and I will be upgrading to try their best model but, it’s a hard sell when this model works so well. I have several other headsets from other mfg and this is now my go-to device.
